Hazardous Waste Management
Hazardous Waste includes all materials which have hazardous properties that may render them harmful to human health or the environment. These are identified in The European Waste Catalogue (EWC 2002) and controlled under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005.
A variety of hazardous waste materials are associated with dismantling and disposal of electrical equipment including: mercury, asbestos, SF6 gas and/or decomposition products, insulating oil and PCBs.
Proper procedures and facilities are vital when handling and transporting hazardous waste. These are licensed by the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive respectively.
Celtic Recycling is the only electrical plant dismantling company in the UK licensed to handle all hazardous wastes which it may encounter during the recovery of electrical equipment. Most consignments of Hazardous Waste are controlled by the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2004 (and the European equivalent ADR regulations). All Celtic Recycling drivers are ADR trained and Celtic has an in-house, qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor to ensure shipments are correctly labelled, packaged, handled and transported. The company has also invested heavily in specialised transport systems, designed to provide additional containment of goods in transit, in excess of that required by regulations.
Celtic Recycling complies with all Hazardous Waste regulations through the strict implementation of special procedures for the analysis, storage, handling and processing of wastes and has routine systems in place as part of its ISO 14001 environmental management system. The company satisfies or exceeds all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements and regularly acts on the behalf of clients regarding both the practical and administrative considerations involved in consigning hazardous waste. All procedures include an auditable document trail.
The company is currently trialling a dual tier bar-coding system for on-site labelling of wastes as equipment is dismantled. This will provide immediate computer based access to all consignment records through the entire handling process. The process is due to be implemented early in 2007.
